Water Towers

Minneapolis has several historic water towers. This oneabove is called The Witches Hat tower, and is located on the highest point in the city. The view from there is gorgeous.

Here's the other one, called The Washburn Water tower, named for the neighborhood that it looms over, and my old high school. The stone carvings on this one are make it look very ominous if you stand directly underneath. Both of them are prime tourist spots and very lovely places to be.

View From My Window

This is the window where my computer sits. That's a Bayberry bush and if I had been on the ball a week ago and snapped this photo, you could have seen it in riotous bloom, covered in tiny, sweet smelling white flowers. It's nice to sit here, the bush provides shade and fun for the birds. But I would rather have this view.

This is out my sunroom window, looking onto my bird feeding stations, lots of green and a nice quiet spot for sitting, relaxing and dozing off. The Hawthorn tree on the right is in full bloom; natures big joke I like to call it. Blooms beautifully but smells like old laundry.

We need a new topic......

Anyone got a really, really great idea????

not so dirty secret.....it could be worse!

Could I be any more transparent at this time??

Yes, I love to cook and I love to read about cooking and I love to think about cooking, keep up on what is new in the cooking world and anything else related to cooking that I can find.
I love wine too. 'Nuf said.

The 'healthy cooking' magazine was one I picked up off a news stand that I had never seen before; it's the only one in the stack that doesn't regularly get stuffed into my mailbox. I am a member of the American Chef's Federation, so the magazine second from the bottom on the left is their monthly mailing, mostly full of news on trends, and happenings of the non-celebrity chefs, plus plenty of drool worthy recipes. 'real food' is a quarterly magazine put out by a local grocer. I imagine you recognize everything else. My favs are Eating Well for the recipes, and Saveur for the reading.

Hungry??

Spring! Finally!

From top to bottom we have Ornamental Flax, California Red Poppy and Crocus; all harbingers of Spring in my garden. Hard to believe barely two weeks ago they were all covered with more than 30 inches of snow.

Spring is coming????? Really??? Where?

This is my garden, the neighbor's shed in the background. Those bushes sticking out of the snow behind that birdbath come up to my chest and shoulders. That drift behind them? I think it would swallow me whole without any hesitation.

Spring is coming???

Ahhh.......no.

New Suggestion

Behold the unpolarized electrical plug, an indication of an appliance that is more than 10 years old. In my case, it's a coffee grinder that I bought at least 20 years ago that has now been delegated to a spice grinder.

Do you have one of these?????

Funny Sign? Or not so funny?

Wait just one darn minute! When did 'Native Prairie Restoration involve brick, concrete and glass?

I live in a semi-rural area that is exploding with both development and a vocal army against all things concrete and steel in order to preserve the natural setting of the area. I have watched this building go up behind this sign for months and can't help but shake my head over the irony of it.

Especially when you read the descprition on the signs themselves.

"This area is being managed to encourage the growth of native wildflowers and plants. The diverse plant community is similar to the prairies that covered much of Minnesota years ago. The variety of grasses and flowering plants provide food and habitat for butterflies, birds and other wildlife. It is estimated that only about 1% of native tall grass prairie remains in the United States today."

So much for preservation, huh?

Home of the Jolly Green Giant

Although I am not from Blue Earth, Minnesota, I do have the somewhat dubious honor of once having stood, as a very young and impressionable girl, right underneath ol' Jolly Green, much as the woman in this photo is doing.

Alas, my suburban 'hood is not one to find either a plastic pink flamingo in winter (although there are TONS in the summer, including a local prank where a randomly picked yard is filled with dozens of them in an overnight 'pink flamingo raid') NOR something of gargantuan proportions, I am at least able to say my home state has many of these giant things.

Baudette, MN on the Canadian border is home to the World's Most Giant Walleye, but I couldn't find a photo.

Vegetables, anyone?
