New Suggestion
Behold the unpolarized electrical plug, an indication of an appliance that is more than 10 years old. In my case, it's a coffee grinder that I bought at least 20 years ago that has now been delegated to a spice grinder.
Do you have one of these?????

no, I don't have one of those - I'm in the UK and our plugs are completely different. Suffice to say, I don't even know what this is - I take it that it is not safe?
Wendy, it's completely safe. The plugs were changed so that one side is wider than the other in order for it to only plug into an outlet one way, to prevent an electrical charge from going through the outlet to the appliance. It is mandatory on any appliance that has metal in it (which is almost all of them) The main body of this old coffee grinder is plastic so it's not considered a hazard.
our plugs have three pins in a triangle so they can only ever go in one way round....maybe I'll post a picture of a UK plug just so you can all see!
